Suicide Prevention During Construction Safety Week

May 10, 2019

In recognition of Construction Safety Week, Michelle Walker, CCIFP, SPHR, chairwoman of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, gave our team some incredible insight into the importance of taking notice of our peers’ mental wellness on and off the jobsite.

Per the Alliance’s website, “construction is the number one industry for number of suicides and suicide rates” due in large part to the demographics in the industry and the high stress job environments. Walker shared how imperative it is for individuals on and off the jobsite to take note of the signs of mental illness to protect the safety of everyone.

CFMA established the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, which is now a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with the goal of providing and disseminating information and resources for suicide prevention and mental health promotion in construction.
