Father Harry T. “Dutch” Olivier, S.J. Athletic Complex dedication
January 5, 2017
Wednesday, January 4th students, alumni, faculty and family members gathered at Brophy College Preparatory for the dedication of the Father Harry T. “Dutch” Olivier, S.J. Athletic Complex. Father Olivier passed away in March 2015 after serving at Brophy for 28 years and as a Jesuit for 70 years. Amid the excitement of an on-going wrestling match and basketball game, the community got their first look inside the athletic practice gym that bears his name.
During her opening remarks Brophy President Adria Renke reaffirmed Brophy’s mission. “We educate the whole person – the mind, the body and the spirit. And this facility fittingly takes care of all those 1,300 bodies that are going to grace it every day.”
Design and construction partners Architekton and Jokake Construction were recognized as well as the thousands of donors who contributed to the actualization of the athletic complex. But the highlight of the event was a unique toast. In lieu of champagne attendees raised sticks of cinnamon flavored Dentyne gum in memory of Father Olivier who faithfully handed out gum to athletes on the sidelines.
“It’s been an amazing experience to be a part of the Brophy community. You can really sense how grateful and excited everyone is to have [the Athletic Complex],” said Jokake Director John Parnell. “It’s a good feeling to be a part of something so meaningful.”
