The primary goal of this project was to reflect the history of The Stockyards site, established in 1947 as the largest cattle feed lot in the world, with the ranching heritage of the Arizona-native founders of Jokake Companies, along with a progressive vision for the contractor’s office environment. The project included renovating the historic two-story structure and constructing three new office buildings as a complement.
Materials and detailing were chosen to reflect this heritage, including knotty alder in horizontal planking, exposed concrete floors and steel beams, custom steel topped conference tables, tall silo-like conference rooms, walls with shred-roof angled tops and sliding barn doors. No wall coverings or faux finishes were used to keep the design true to the construction materials: to express construction, not cover it up. Besides enhancing the design aesthetic goals, this allows Jokake Construction Co. to educate potential clients about construction technique and building systems.
The interior is open and airy, emphasizing circulation and promoting inter-departmental connectivity, through the use of exposed catwalks, glass storefront conference cubes, and exposed mechanical systems.
